February might be too early to start talking about spring, especially when the forecast is threatening snow. But the days are getting definitely longer, birds are tweeting in the Roman Gardens, and daffodils have been spotted by the Old Dee Bridge. It’s not far off now!
We’ve had a pretty busy winter…
After a run of sold out party nights leading up to Christmas, we then continued sailing on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day for the first time. Our “Twixmas Special” of a free mince pie and hot drink proved very popular!
Once we’d taken down the tinsel and swept up the mince pie crumbs, it was time to get our hands dirty. We stripped everything off the boats (tables, benches, all the Peroni from the bar) and sailed up to Sandy Lane. A small crowd gathered to watch the Lady Diana, the Mark Twain and the Jackie lifted out of the water by a crane capable of lifting 300 tonnes.
Whilst out of the water, the fleet recieved some TLC and a fresh coat of paint. All mechanical parts were inspected, and ultrasound tests carried out to measure the thickness of the hulls. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) visited to check everything was shipshape – similar to when you take your car for its MOT.
After ten busy days of sanding, painting, and cleaning, the fleet were returned to the water, where we put the furniture back on and added the finishing touches. The MCA came back for another inspection and… we passed!
So we’re ready for another busy season on the river – starting this weekend!
